Yeah, it is a lot of work. Unfortunately I could have created one manually for all the time I tried to figure out OOo macros.

I’ve seen the ones on Amazon etc. but I was in a hurry and wanted to get this done for him. I’ve also had bad experiences in the past ordering things online.

I think his corn is up to a of couple leaves (is that how they say it?) and I’m so bummed I can’t get this for him …aahhhhh!

I went back and dug up my source code a while back, thinking I might publish a new one, but it's really a hassle and seems to be something I'm only willing to do once every ten years. The first one was a Word macro, ten years later I did it with a script that generated an XML file and then an XSLT stylesheet that created the PDF using XML-FO. If it sounds like a lot of work, you're right. That being said, there do appear to be a number of five year journals available on Amazon, in fact a couple of them seem to be specifically made for gardeners or farmers. Do any of these fit the bill for you? Maybe I should revisit and build one that will just generate from a given date and spit out a PDF, but I won't personally need a new one for another seven years, so it's hard to get inspired.

Hi, sorry to blast back to something old and unrelated, but I saw your post for a ten-year journal. I have been looking far and wide for a five year journal exactly like your ten-year version. I spent a week trying to figure out OOo Writer macros so I could generate one kind of like what you did, but I got lost and gave up. Any chance you could post an updated five-year version, starting in 2010? You’d get a lot of hits, as I’ve seen many people online looking for these (I guess printed journals are considered to be antiquated now?).
The reason I need one is that my boyfriend is a farmer and he wants to track the progess of his crops, the timing of seeding over the years, etc. His corn is growing and I’m still tangled up in the spaghetti-documentation of the OOo world! He asked me to find him a five-year journal (“like the one my father used to use”) two months ago! help!

I like Windows, I like Linux, I like Mac. I’ve owned Macs in the past, I wouldn’t mind having another one, but I have never experienced the downtime with Windows that you describe. Given your logic, everyone should abandon their Macs and come to Windows because I’ve had such a good experience with it.

Fact is, I don’t care what you use – use what you like and enjoy it. It has just always puzzled me why so many Mac and Linux users think everyone should use what they’re using and spend their time bellyaching about it. I’m sorry you had trouble with Windows and your “creaking VIAO.” I’ll help you troubleshoot it if you want. But if you can complain about it on your blog, I can complain right back on mine.
